    Consisting of microfilm and closed originals, the John Lind Mexican Mission Papers recount former Minnesota congressman (1883-1897 and 1903-1905) and governor (1899-1901) John Lind's diplomatic mission to Mexico in 1913-1914 during the Mexican Revolution as the personal representative of President Woodrow Wilson, and reflect his continued involvement and interest in Mexican affairs subsequent to that time. They comprise all of his papers for the years 1913-1916, the majority of which concern Mexico, plus those items for the period 1917-1931 that relate to Mexico. Included are diplomatic dispatches, correspondence, reports from others involved in Mexican affairs, printed materials, and copies of official documents.

    Correspondence, photographs, an obituary, and a funeral program of Gustave Albert Botman of Deer River, Minnesota, who served in the 7th Infantry Division of the United States Army in France during World War I. The bulk of the collection consists of Swedish-language correspondence (September 1918-March 1919) between Botman and his wife Anna while Botman was away serving in the war. English-language translations of the correspondence were made by Charles John LaVine. Gustave is referred to as Albert in the correspondence.

    This collection contains a wide variety of sheet music detailing popular culture’s embrace of the United States' participation in World War I. Topics depicted in song and on cover art range from military recruitment and battle narratives to celebrations of the home front, focusing particularly on children and virtuous sweethearts. Other themes include American engagement with European cultural life, rallying support for European allies, and the necessity for maintaining loyalty to the U.S. across its ethnic divisions. Popular motifs include “Uncle Sam” or “Sammy,” patriotic symbols, and caricatures of Kaiser Wilhelm II, while popular stars of the time like Al Jolson are often featured prominently on the cover. A number of these items were collected by Howard Woolsey of St. Paul and donated by his widow Elizabeth Bisbee Woolsey in 1970.
