    Correspondence, newspaper clippings, legal papers, genealogical materials, diaries, recipe books, and other papers pertaining to a fur trader, Minnesota territorial delegate to Congress, United States senator, and state public official and entrepreneur, his wife Matilda, and members of their extended family. Includes information about federal land surveying, Fort Snelling, Indian affairs, Rice's business affairs, the American Fur Company and individual fur traders, railroad construction, and a court-martial of a member of the 59th New York Volunteers. Papers for 1901-1966 are chiefly those of the Robert (Auerbach) Rice family and include information about their business affairs and the change of the family name from Auerbach to Rice.

He is most closely associated with the Quetico-Superior Council of which he was a founder (1928) and president; with the President's Quetico-Superior Committee, on which he served from 1934-1968; and in general with the struggle to preserve the wilderness character of the border lakes region between the United States and Canada, especially as a founder and officer (1937-1967 of the Wilderness Society.

    Biographical information, correspondence (1930-1961), publications (1930-1958), photographs, and miscellaneous materials of Davies, a geologist, mining engineer, and official of Aramco and other oil companies in the Middle East. Davies graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1916 with a degree in mining engineering. He was responsible for early explorations of the oil fields in Bahrain in the 1930s. In 1952 Davies was named CEO and Chairman of the Board for Aramco until he retired in 1959.

    Records documenting the scientific and technical aspects of stratospheric balloon research, as conducted by General Mills, Inc., and Winzen Research Inc., a Minneapolis-based balloon manufacturer led by Otto Winzen, whom also developed the aeronautical laboratories and proposed upper atmospheric research at General Mills. The collection contains flight plans, reports, proposals, data sheets, and photographs (undated and 1947-1965). The project was begun by General Mills in 1940 to research the use of balloons for military systems, fire control, and industrial precision instruments and equipment. Research was conducted by the Mechanical Division and Electronics Group of General Mills. The collection also includes: unidentified photographic albums and folders of balloon research; papers of Otto Winzen; and bylaws for the Aerostat Society of America, Minnesota Balloon Division (June 10, 1969).
