Pair of United States Army Lieutenant Colonel's Medical Staff epaulettes contained in a japanned tin box. Also found in the box was a New York Militia button. The epaulettes were worn by Doctor Jacob H. Stewart during the Civil War. Stewart was appointed Chief Surgeon of the First Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment in June of 1861. In the aftermath of the First Battle of Bull Run, Stewart stayed on the battlefield caring for wounded Confederate soldiers as well as the wounded men from the First Minnesota. He was taken prisoner and held at Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia. After his release Stewart became Post Surgeon at Fort Snelling and he served there until the end of the war.Details: http://collections.mnhs.org/cms/display?irn=10400021
